Softball playoffs to resume on Tuesday

The rain washed out the Whitehorse Co-Ed Slo-Pitch Softball League's plans to hold its annual Closing Tourney this past weekend.
Instead, the playoffs have been pushed back and games will be played Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Competition this week will be played at the Pepsi Softball Centre and the Takhini diamonds, using two time slots: 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The tournament finals will be played on Saturday at the Pepsi Softball Centre.
The competition uses a modified triple knockout format, however come Saturday it will be a single final, regardless of whether a squad is undefeated or has lost two games.
However, because the team with the best record is awarded home field advantage there is plenty of incentive to have the best win loss ratio.
A heavy downpour late this past week resulted in flooding both fields and dugouts, making play impossible.
"It's definitely a safety issue and laundry issue too maybe," chuckled Bud Arnold, the league's secretary and treasurer. "People play in that stuff, they are going to come home wearing half the ball field."
One of the divisions that did manage to wrap up play was Division One, which concluded this past Thursday.
The final was a real thriller played between the top team in first half of the season (the AFD Trappers), who took on the Division's best squad from the second half (Tlingit Electric).
Thanks to a three-run final inning, Tlingit Electric squeaked out a close 18-17 victory. This was the second time during the Closing Tourney that Tlingit Electric handed the Trappers a one-run loss.
"They are good a team," said AFD Trappers' team rep. Logan Wedge about Tlingit Electric. "We played them really tight all year and we really enjoy playing them too because they are pretty easy to get along with. We just played a good game, but not good enough."
Before AFD went toe-to-toe with Tlingit, the group first had to get past Roadhouse earlier on Thursday. A two-run homer from Derek Baldwin gave Roadhouse the lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
However, after AFD went to work, loading up the bases with no outs, shortstop Brian White went to work, blasting a grand slam to give his team a dramatic 28-26 win.
Another player who was critical in the Trappers victory over Roadhouse was Kim Solonick. She went four-for-four with two walks and battle in more than a few runs in the process.
White went back to work in the top of the first inning, hitting another humdinger. Thanks to the homer, his team enjoyed a 3-0 lead.
The lead was short lived, however, and Tlingit batted in eight runs in bottom half of the first inning.
Both teams were blanked in the second, before AFD scored one in the top of the fourth. Needing a big inning as a result of trailing 9-4 in the fifth, the Trappers got on the bats, cashing in seven runs.
Four of the seven runs were batted in by Kurt Campbell, who hit a grand slam, which got the team going.
Tlingit responded in the bottom of the sixth, retaking the lead on a six-run showing.
Two homers made up the majority of the team's runs.
AFD had one final chance in the top of the seventh. Down 15-11, the group drove in six runs on a combination of walks and hits.
Players on Tlingit weren't about to concede though and brought in three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
"That was a pretty good game too, we had a couple big innings at the end," said Wedge.
He said division one was a lot of fun this season.
"What's been nice about the league for division one is the teams have all been competitive," he said. "We have won a lot of games, but we haven't really blown a lot of teams out. It's been a good competitive division."
Roadhouse placed third overall, beating KalTire in the other division one final on Thursday.
