A ragtag team of Complete Concrete Athletics players came together to win the first Division 1 tournament of the season last weekend.

“This team was kind of brand new for this weekend,” said Brett Green of Complete Concrete Athletics. “We had quite a few people out of town this weekend, so we picked up from some other teams that couldn't put a team in.”

The thrown-together team beat the CRB Nighthawks 18-11 in seven innings at the Whitehorse Pepsi Softball Centre Saturday afternoon.

The Night Hawks got off to an early lead, scoring nine of their final 11 points in the first two innings.

“We had some good infield plays there, some good diving catches that turned things around for us,” said Calvin Charlie of the Nighthawks.

It’s their first year fielding a team for Division 1.

Complete Concrete Athletics turned things around in the third inning, after only scoring three in the first two. Almost their complete batting line-up scored, a grand total of 10 in one inning.

They weren’t able to match it again, but the damage was already done.

“It was all base hit after base hit and get the runners on and get them home,” said Green.

Green said his team is known to be slow-starting. “Again, slow start and finish hard which we haven’t had to do so far in this tournament,” he said. “We were starting strong basically all our other games.”

The team made it through the tournament in straight wins.

In that final game, they maxed-out on home runs early.

In a fast-paced game, the final was over in just about an hour. Both teams were catching well in the final innings and the play ended on a fitting Hail Mary catch by Green far in the outfield. “I figured I needed to do something big right so I just committed right away,” he said. “The ball was dying down and I just stuck with it.”

Also playing their first tournament of the season was division 4. That side was won by the Wiebe Warriors.

The Pepsi Softball Centre will host the 2016 Slo-Pitch Nationals in August with four teams competing from the Yukon.

The ladies will play August 9 to 13, while the men will play August 7-13. All the games will be free to the public.
