Skiers vie in classic technique race

The action was fast and furious at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club Saturday afternoon Cross Country Yukon's January Classic race.

The action was fast and furious at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club Saturday afternoon Cross Country Yukon's January Classic race.

All classes began using a mass start and skied varying laps of the stadium.

Results:

All U16 athletes and older completed 7.5 kilometres, or two laps of 3.75 kilometres.

Constance Lapointe proved to be the quickest U16 girl, finishing the race in 26:15. One minute, 36 seconds behind was Abigail Jirousek, who beat out Sophia Giangrande by just under a minute to secure second place.

It was a close race atop the U18 girls division. Kate Mason, 28:15, edged past Bella Mouchet by 19 seconds to grab the top spot. Maude Molgat placed third.

Sonjaa Schmidt was the lone athlete in the U20 girls division and completed the 7.5 kilometres in 26:28. Emilie Stewart-Jones, 25:59, won the Senior Women category – she too was the only athlete in the age group.

The Masters Women group was taken by Kirstenn Magnusson in 31:55. Laura Salmon was 47 seconds behind the winning pace and Heather Milligan took third.

Cole Germain, 24:17, was the victor in the U16 boys division. Twenty-four seconds after, Simon Connell crossed the finish line. Finnegan Gallant came third.

By the tip of his ski, Isidore Champagne, 24:47, just beat Noah Connell by two seconds to win the U18 boys category. Aleix Sarin-Toews placed third.

It was another photo finish in the Senior Men category. By only a second, Caelan Pangman McLean, 22:37, just beat Colin Abbott to win.

The day's largest division was the Masters Men, which featured 12 skiers. John Parry proved the quickest, completing the distance in 24:15. Matthias Purdon was four seconds off the winning pace and Dominic Bradford placed third.

The U14 girls and boys did one lap of the ski stadium, racing 3.75 kilometres.

Aramintha Bradford won the girls' race in 14:14. Less than a minute behind was Cheyenne Tirschmann, and Juliet Crowe was third.

Nicolas Giangrande won the boys' race finishing in 13:28. Jonah McConnell, 14:17, and Finegand Bradford, 15:21, placed second and third respectively.
