SOARING - Riders in the Snowmobile Uphill Challenge got lots of air time at Mount Sima this weekend
Ski Doo was the big winner Sunday at the first annual Yukon Yamaha/Mt. Sima Snowmobile Uphill Challenge.
Ski Doo was the big winner Sunday at the first annual Yukon Yamaha/Mt. Sima Snowmobile Uphill Challenge.
Thanks to a couple of riders, the snowmobile company took top spot in four of the event's five categories.
Darryl Tait finished first in the 500cc class, while Ross Mercer won the three events he was entered in.
"I showed up late and I didn't get to practice, so the first race I hadn't seen the track yet, but it was a pretty straightforward run," Mercer said. "I just kind of went as fast as I could and I guess it was enough to win."
The format featured a two rider race up Dan's Decent, with multiple jumps along the course. The competition wasn't timed and a rider had to lose twice to be eliminated.
Sunday's course wasn't particularly long, which suited Mercer just fine.
"It's super short, you are done before you even start breathing hard, it's pretty much just a sprint up the hill," he said. "It was a lot of fun. I am looking forward to doing it again next year."
Thirty-five riders registered for the event, which was encouraging for Guillaume Rochet, Mount Sima's area manager.
"For the first time it's pretty good, it's more than some ski races in the winter, so I am very happy to see 35 people," he said. "The snowmobile event was the first time in the Yukon and I think next year would be just bigger.
"The idea is maybe to have a full weekend for next season."
Rochet said Mount Sima sold 170 tickets for the competition, but wasn't sure how much the ski hill made because food and drinks were also for sale.
"It's a good way to make money for Sima for sure and it's a good way to expose Yamaha for the community for snowmobile activities."
The different categories included a 500cc, 600cc, 700cc, 800cc and open.
