The Yukon capital’s ski and snowboard season ended with a splash last weekend at Mount Sima.

While enthusiasts will have one more chance to ride a terrain park on the bunny hill this Saturday afternoon, last weekend’s two-day Simapalooza effectively marked the end of the season at the Whitehorse ski hill.

About 700 people were at the hill both Saturday and Sunday for the ever-popular Slush Cup, Sima’s general manager Cindy Chandler told the Star.

Chandler said the hill had 23,000 day visits this season – up by 2,000 over last year – alongside 1,000 season-pass holders.

“It was a great party,” she said. “It has been a very successful season, despite a low snow year. ... I believe we will be open 72 days, which I believe is the longest (season ever).

“I think the community support is there. ... And of course, the pre-season training project was very successful.”

The Yukon snowboard and freestyle ski championships were also held in conjuction with Simapalooza.

Matthew Johnson and Mackenzie Davy won their respective open snowboardcross titles, while Eli Marsh and Ben Machtans took the younger division titles.

Tim Schirmer took the slopestyle open category, with Sammy Mather and Machtans also winning their age groups.

Shane Orban won the open skiercross race, with Mael Pronovost, John Tipton and Louis Mouchet also claiming younger age-group victories.

Additionally, Jacob Nickel and Sabastien Insley won the junior jam.

In the freestyle skiing competition, Etienne Geoffroy was the big winner, taking both the big air and age-16-plus slopestyle titles.

Oriana Gallina took the girls 10-and-under slopestyle race ahead of her two sisters.
