After a disappointing playoff run in Whitehorse, the longtime Yukon powerhouse club ensured themselves a fine off-season by downing the 202 Saloon Shooters 1-0 in Sunday’s final.
The victory earned the team the Kluane Park Inn Cup.
The 202 Saloon Shooters also finished second in the local league playoffs, won by the Capital Towing Jets.
The Shooters upset top-ranked Yukon Brewing 1-0 in their semi.
Bears assistant captain Shayne Fairman said his team’s goaltending came up big in the Haines Junction tournament, allowing a total of seven goals in six games.
A surprise twist saw Darryl Cann take to the net in the final after Bears starter Chris Sawyer declared himself out with a hamstring injury after their 3-1 semifinal win over Yukon Thunder. Cann guided the Bears to their last league title in 2013.
On the other side of the rink, longtime Nacho Nyak Dun DC star Johnny Tom Tom provided the heroics for the Bears, sniping the game’s lone goal – his third of the tournament.
“It was the old guys who ended up doing the bulk of the scoring,” Fairman chuckled, noting both he and Dave Hopkins scored twice in the three-day tourney.
Danielle Sawyer had a stellar tournament, recording a handful of assists at forward.
The Bears opened their tournament with a 1-1 tie versus P&M Recycling on Friday, then beat the 202 Saloon 3-1.
They dropped their lone game to the Thunder by a 2-1 score on Saturday before concluding the round-robin with a 2-2 tie versus Yukon Brewing.
Five teams competed in this year’s season-ending tournament, which featured plenty of low-scoring games.
The Bears were the highest-scoring club, scoring a tournament-best three goals in two of their games.
“Overall, we had a great season, with the exception of the stumble in the playoffs,” he noted. “We won the opening tournament, the league and the closing tournament. It was a pretty successful season, overall.”
Last season, the Bears lost the Function in the Junction tournament to the Ridge Pub by a 1-0 overtime score.
