The Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle finished up the indoor archery season with a successful event at the Takhini Elementary School on Sunday.

Twenty-one competitors ages eight to 61 flexed their bows at the Fourth Indoor Archery Championship. They competed in barebow, compound and recurve.

The event was a 300 challenge, where archers are given three arrows per end and shoot those 10 times. A perfect score per round is 300.

For the individual events, archers shot two rounds and the closest to perfect score was shot by Rocky Philpott in the senior compound category with a score of 571.

Colin Hickman of the Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle said that archery is gaining more prominence in the community and that the event is a good tune-up before heading outdoors for the summer season.

“You’re always trying to improve,” he said. “There’s that challenge, to do better every time.”

In indoor archery, archers line up 18 metres away from standing paper targets. They are scored based on how close to a bullseye they can hit each time.

Conversely in outdoor, they shoot at lifelike 3-D targets, often in the likeness of animals, which are farther away.

Shooting the best results out of 600 were Kate Koepke, youth barebow (181); Amanda Chaulk, youth recurve (270); Vincent Ménard, youth compound (490); Tom Rowles, adult barebow (321); Alan Hansen, adult recurve (412); and Rocky Philpott, adult compound (571).

The Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle will host its first-ever school tournament on May 25 at the outdoor range from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. And the Whitehorse Archery Club will open its outdoor season tonight at Grey Mountain.
