Selects take first game in weekend series with Tok

The Whitehorse Midget Selects opened a weekend of non-stop hockey action in the Yukon's capital, pulling off a convincing 10-3 win over Tok, Alaska Thursday night at the Canada Games Centre.

The Whitehorse Midget Selects opened a weekend of non-stop hockey action in the Yukon's capital, pulling off a convincing 10-3 win over Tok, Alaska Thursday night at the Canada Games Centre.

Coty Fraser led the way for the Selects, notching two goals and adding an assist, while Drew O'Connor also potted a pair of goals. Burt Stephens contributed a goal and three assists while Eddy Oulton picked up a goal and two helpers.

Riley Tobin and Yudii Mercredi each chipped in a goal and an assist while Ryan Wilson and Craig Flaherty also bulged the twine. Jarret Kreft finished with three assists while Michael Fisher and Jeremy Nugent each had one helper.

Tok goaltender Jake Kendal put in an impressive performance, making several huge saves to keep the game as close as it was. The scoring for the Alaska crew was not available.

The next game between the Selects and Tok is 7 p.m., on the NHL rink at the Games centre.

The Whitehorse bantam Mustangs, meanwhile, played their first game of the weekend against Fairbanks this morning. The score was not yet available. They'll play again at 5 p.m. at Takhini Arena.

The midget Mustangs face off against the Northwest Territories at 8 p.m. at Takhini Arena.

All three series continue through Saturday and wrap up on Sunday.
