Huskies hopefuls vying to impress coach Michael Tuton will have a couple more chances after Monday night’s scrimmage with the U16 Mustangs.

But there won’t be many spots for them to fill on the roster, said Tuton on Tuesday.

Most of Tuton’s Coy Cup qualifying team from last year is coming back for another shot.

“Those guys are guaranteed a spot,” he said. “We only have a few spots available.”

During Monday night’s scrimmage at the Canada Games Centre, Tuton said that some of the defensive players did impress, but without his defensive coach, Jay Massie, in attendance, Tuton was reluctant to make any calls.

Some of those spots available on the Huskies roster are alternates.

The skaters train with the team and are called up as needed.

“They end up playing in 80, 90 per cent of the games,” said Tuton. People get hurt, and others can’t always make every game.

The Huskies will play an inter-squad game Sunday between hopefuls and returning players and will face off against the Mustangs in one more pre-season game next Monday at the CGC.

“The opening day line-up is pretty much set,” said Tuton. “(But) there’s always room for somebody to take a spot.”
