Northern Alberta’s newly minted senior men’s curling champs
Northern Alberta’s newly minted senior men’s curling champs have booked themselves a trip to the Boston Pizza Cup and have a chance to play for a berth at the Tim Hortons Brier.
Thomas Scoffin’s rink, featuring third Tristan Steinke, second Jason Ginter and lead Brett Winfield will battle Alberta’s best men’s curling teams starting Feb. 8 in Westlock, Alta., to see who will represent the province at the Brier in St. John’s, N.L.
“We’re feeling great. We’re on a bit of a roll here,” said 22-year-old skip Scoffin this morning. “We’re just looking to carry that through to provincials.”
For most of the rink, it will be their first time competing at the senior men’s provincials.
However they are no stranger to big competition.
In November, the team won its first World Curling Tour, the Dawson Creek Cash Spiel.
Scoffin, originally from Whitehorse, has also played internationally, leading Canada to a bronze medal at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games.
This roster is a new look for the Scoffin rink, who got their start playing together at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where Scoffin is in his fifth year.
With Alberta powerhouse team Kevin Koe getting a bye to the Brier, it opens up the field for a new generation of teams to compete on the national stage.
Scoffin said his team is hoping to take advantage of that. They’re seeded fifth and will take on bottom-seed Robinson in their first game on Feb. 8.
“We’re just getting more and more consistent making the shots we need to make,” he said.
And as well as they played at Northerns, Scoffin doesn’t think his team has hit their best yet.
“We’re feeling confident... We’re going to have to have our A-game,” he said,
“And to be honest I don’t even know if we found our A-game in the Northerns.”
