Saunders family helps lead team to Kopper King Cup in local broomball action

Team captures fourth championship in five years.
The Na-Cho Nyak Dun Development Corporation (NNDDC) broomball team won their fourth Kopper King Cup in the last five years over the weekend, defeating the Spectrum Security Bears 3-0.
NNDDC carried an undefeated record into the playoffs, going 25-0-2 during the regular season. Their roster also boasted the league's top five scorers and the team posted 127 goals throughout the regular season.
The team is just as solid on the defensive end and held their opponents to just nine goals throughout the year.
"They have the best offence, the best defence and one of the best goalies,” said Shayne Fairman of the Bears.
NNDDC was also fuelled by the play of the Saunders family.
Amber Saunders, the leading female scorer in the league, the league's female MVP, and the NNDDC captain, is joined on the team by her brother Justin and father Chris.
Justin was the second leading scorer in the league with 18 goals and 40 points, trailing teammate Matt Dickson who scored a league best 32 goals to go along with 53 points.
Chris is not only the best defensive player in the league but was crowned the best defenceman in the world at the Wolrd Broomball Championships in Austria.
Amber said the team has also been joined in the past by her mom, Julie, and oldest brother, Stephan.
"I grew up watching it and it's always been part of our lives since we were really young,” said Amber. "I definitely think that helps give us an advantage.”
She said the family has developed strong chemistry when playing, but having three members on the rink instead of five works just as well.
"It's a much more calm atmosphere with just three of us,” she said, laughing. "Now that my brother and mom have left the bench it's not as heated when it was all five of us.”
Fairman said the Bears thought they had a chance because Dickson, the leading scorer, was thought to be out of town. When he showed up 10 minutes before game time, those hopes diminished.
"When he (Dickson) rolled in right before the start of the game, we said "oh darn,'” said Fairman.
It was a scoreless first period but Dickson opened up the scoring at the start of the second and Justin would add two more goals before the period was over.
"Once we got down a few goals we knew we'd have a hard time getting back into it,” said Fairman.
"Our goalie, Chris Sawyer, was standing on his head, we were fortunate to still be that close after the second period.”
NNDDC goalie Tim MacIntosh, earned a shutout in the final and also led the league with a 0.22 goals against average.
The teams are now switching their focus to the "Fucntion in the Junction” tournament, the annual year-end event.
The Bears won the tournament last year and Fairman is hoping they'll be able to bounce back after dropping the championship.
The teams will face a brutal schedule of seven games in a little over 60 hours and a team from Homer, Alaska will also be competing.
"We don't know what to expect from the Alaska team,” said Fairman.
"It was good to win it last year and hopefully we can defend the title this time around.”
