Players on Sam N Andy's surprised more than just themselves this past weekend at the 2009 Coed Opening Softball tournament.
The squad showed it was a lot better than its 0-2 Division Two record, winning four straight games, including a 24-14 rout over the Terrorizers in Sunday's final.
"We were not expecting to win," said Neisha Bicudo, Sam N Andy's team captain.
"It's really encouraging. We started to jell in the tournament."
Clutch hits and advancing runners made a big difference for Sam N Andy's throughout the opening tournament.
On Sunday, the team got off to a quick start, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning and then shutting down the terrorizers in the bottom half.
The Terrorizers found their stride in next few innings, despite the early deficit, scoring twice in the second and then adding three more runs to its total.
After both teams blanked the fourth inning the score was 7-5.
Sam N Andy's regained its offensive form in the fifth. For the second time, the group notched five runs in a single inning, but more importantly started to pull away nearing the end of the game.
The sixth inning was an important one for Sam N Andy's. The team started off with two hits, including a double by George Maratos, but with two outs it didn't look like they were going to score any runs.
However, that changed with three straight hits that added six runs to its lead. The score was 18-13 after six innings.
Sam N Andy's added a little insurance in the seventh, loading the bases with none out, setting up Maratos for a deep single that went off the fence that scored two runs.
"That was the longest single I have ever seen," said Terrorizers short stop Joe Vigneau to Maratos.
Four more runs were added in the seventh before a liner caught by Terrorizer pitcher Jason Costinak ended the inning.
Despite getting a few runners on base in the final inning, the Terrorizers weren't able to muster more than one run and the game ended on a nice fielding play to Sam N Andy's short stop Taylor Doonan.
Currently the Terrorizers are tied with Complete Concrete for first place in the Division 2 standings. Both teams have a 3-0 record.
