Saint Murphy ensures happy holidays for Pepsi
Superheroes came in many shapes and sizes, but rarely do they come in the form of a broken old Irishman.
Superheroes came in many shapes and sizes, but rarely do they come in the form of a broken old Irishman.
But that’s what happened in old-timer soccer action Saturday morning at the Canada Games Centre.
Pepsi was down and out at the half, trailing Quest Computers 4-0 with two goals from David Rayo, and singles from Guliano Rayo and Travis Schommer.
But when things are at their bleakest, you have to look deep into your soul and find your inner strength, and there is nobody stronger than Eric Murphy.
The 42-year-old Irishman blasted four goals in the second half to haul Pepsi back from the brink to tie the game 4-4 at the final whistle.
In the early game, meanwhile, Yukon Brewing got back to their winning ways with a 5-2 victory over Klondike Business Solutions (KBS).
Led by a powerhouse performance by Rob Florkiewicz, the Brew were able to score at vital times to keep a willing KBS at bay.
Brew goals came from Steve Insley (2), Andy Todd, Mark O’Brien and Jurgen Korn and a goal apiece from KBS’s Jim Connell and Rob Bousquet rounded out the scoring.
The four-team Whitehorse Rapids over-35 men’s soccer league will now enjoy a two-week break for the holidays.
In action Dec. 12, KBS beat Pepsi 7-4, but that is only a small part of the story.
There will be a few people on Santa’s naughty list after this bad-tempered affair, as the neutral fan was entertained by this Christmas farce with goals raining in from all angles.
Referee Geoff Woodhouse was like an evil St. Nick, dishing out red and yellow cards throughout the game.
Adil Khalik led the way with four goals for KBS and was assisted by Arnold ‘The Hitman’ Hedstrom, Grant Zazula and Bosquet with a goal each.
Replying for Pepsi were Ian Robinson, Phil Jackson and Paul Inglis (2).
In the other contest, Quest Computers ended Yukon Brew’s win streak with a comprehensive victory as they ran out 5-1 winners.
Led by the Nova Scotian Messi, Gord Barker with two goals, they easily tamed a neutered Brew team missing influential player Liz Bradley who is out for the season.
Keith Welch, David Rayo and Guliano Rayo all got goals for Quest, with a lucky O’Brien goal the only reward for the Brew.
