For almost 20 years, Athletics Yukon has held the Yukon 10 km Road Race Championships each summer, to determine the territory's fastest male and female runners.

Past winners have gone on to attend the National 10 km Road Race Championships. For example, one year Whitehorse's Brian Bell attended the nationals as Yukon's male road race champion. He was picked up by Team BC for the team portion of the nationals and he ended up running faster than some of his teammates.

This summer's Yukon championship was held on Saturday, July 14. The weather was in the low teens, sunny with a moderate south wind. The flat, out-and-back course started and finished on the Yukon river trail behind the Visitor Reception Centre.

The route took the runners to a turnaround point on the Schwatka Lake Road, following the Millenium Trail's popular river wall, past the busy Robert Service Campground, to and along the scenic Schwatka Lake Road.

To no one's surprise, masters runner Sue Bogle posted the fastest time among the female runners, at 44:56. Running in the junior category (under-20) and with no serious challengers from anyone, Ray Sabo cruised to an easy win as the fastest male runner, with a time of 37:39.

Other runners joining Bogle and Sabo in the top five were: Tom Ullyett (40:49), first in the masters 40-49 division; Fred Vandernot (41:45), first in the open men 20-39 group, and Don White (42:31), first in the masters 50-59 category.
