Ryan Downing Memorial swim meet this weekend

The annual Ryan Downing Memorial swim meet is being held at the Canada Games Centre starting at 5:45 p.m. on Friday.

The annual Ryan Downing Memorial swim meet is being held at the Canada Games Centre starting at 5:45 p.m. on Friday.

Swimmers from Alaska will join over 100 Whitehorse swimmers at the meet. Whitehorse Glacier Bears coach Marek Poplawski says they are expecting teams from Haines and possibly Juneau this weekend.

Warm-ups start at 4:30 p.m. on Friday for participating swimmers, followed by a coaches meeting at 5:30 p.m. before the competition officially begins. The Friday night action is set to finish up at 9 p.m.

On Saturday the meet continues with warmups starting at 8 a.m., and races at 9 a.m. Following that, youth 10 and under warm-ups start at 10:30 a.m. and competition from 11 a.m.to noon.

In the afternoon warm-ups start for the open age group at 2 p.m. The coaches will meet at 2:30 p.m. and competition will run from 2:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Ribbons will be awarded for those swimmers that achieve a personal best at the meet.

The swimmers will compete in distances from 50 metres to 400 metres in breast stroke, fly, free, back and IM. A 1,500 metre event will be held Friday, and 200 metre relays for boys and girls will be held at the end of the day Saturday.

The event is hosted by the Whitehorse Glacier Bears and sponsored by Swim Yukon.
