It did not take long for Yukon runners to get back at it after competing in the Yukon 5km Championships last Tuesday.

Starting in Rotary Peace Park near the splash pad runners tested their times yet again on Tuesday in the Sports Expert 5km Fun Run/Walk. This was a self-timed event.

The course the runners followed differed from the Championship. This week the runners ran under the bridge toward the SS Klondike and instead of following the Millennium Trail onward they looped up and went across the bridge heading in the direction of F.H. Collins.

It was a nice cool day down by the river, far less hot than it was on the day of the Yukon Championship. The wind blew harder but with that, the smoke that has been heavy in the skies was not a factor on Tuesday.

The runners left the start at 6 p.m. and it did not take long for the leader to get back to the finish.

The volunteers at the end were waiting for the first runner then he became visible after popping out from under the bridge. It was Shane Carlos, who did the five-kilometres in 16 minutes and 15 seconds.

Carlos was the overall winner of the Yukon Championship. He said he felt he went slightly slower during the fun run.

He attributed the slower time to the number of races is adding up and the legs begin to feel it, not to mention all the training in-between the events.

His time Tuesday was eight seconds slower than last week’s race.

Shane’s brother, Luke Carlos, was the second runner to reach the finish in a time of 17 minutes, 33 seconds. Luke was able to post a faster time than his second-place time in the Yukon Championship.

Jonathan Zaugg was the third male finisher in a time of 18 minutes, 29 seconds.

The fastest female was Selena Boothroyd in a time of 26 minutes, 12 seconds. Her time was slightly slower than the time she posted in the Yukon Championships.

Robin Sharples was next across in the female category in a time of 29 minutes, 50 seconds and she was followed by third-place finisher Angela Kiriak, who had a time of 32 minutes, 54 seconds.

The three-kilometre run had two athletes. Marc-Andre Gillis, 27 minutes, 57 seconds, was able to edge his dad, Robert to the finish, beating him by five seconds.
