The snow has melted and the mercury continues to rise in the thermometers. With the nice weather arriving in Whitehorse, Athletics Yukon held their first Sports Experts 5km Fun Run/Walk of 2019 on Tuesday.

The participants met at F.H. Collins Secondary School’s far parking lot for the 5-kilometre run or walk. The course took them first down Lewes Boulevard where they turned through the skateboard park and continued along the Millennium Trail.

From the trail, they popped out on Nisutlin Drive and headed towards the Whitehorse Dam before turning around and coming back down Nisutlin toward Lewes, ultimately ending up back at the starting line.

Timer extraordinaire Marg White awaited the runners at the finish line to clock their times.

In talking with Marg and her husband Don at the finish line as they awaited the first runners to get back from the loop they said the Fun Run is a race against one’s self.

The purpose of timing the run is to give each athlete a time they can continue to try and improve upon as the running season progresses.

There were 18 runners, ranging in age, out on Tuesday, an overcast and windy day that threatened rain at any point.

The young runners did a 2.5 kilometres run instead of five kilometres.

Tedd Tucker was the first runner to make it to the finish. He posted a time of 19 minutes, and 49 seconds, in which he will look to shave time off of as he gets his running legs back.

Right behind Tucker was Scott Williams who finished the five-kilometre trail loop in 19 minutes, 52 seconds. What made his time impressive was that he was pushing a stroller with his young child.

The third fastest time on Tuesday belonged to Thomas Moore who reached the finish line in 20 minutes, and eight seconds.

The Fun Run will take place every Tuesday from now until the end of September. As so far posted, they will begin at F.H. Collins and follow the same five or 2.5 kilometre course around the Millennium Trail.
