Three elementary school students have won the bikes donated by Tim Horton's through a contest run at their schools, in support of the annual Run for Mom fund-raiser.

Tim Hortons' owner Dean Terry contacted the Run for Mom organizing committee earlier this year, offering three bikes as prizes for the annual breast cancer event.

Run for Mom Co-chair Val Pike said the committee immediately wanted to do something for the schools who support the run every year.

"Students who participated in their own school events put their names into a draw.

The draws were made at each participating school the week leading up the Run for Mom, held annually on Mother's Day", said Pike in a press release. "It's wonderful to have the schools supporting this important community event and the young people are really important contributors to our initiatives."

The three lucky students are James Harris (Grey Mountain Primary), Aiden Stoker (Christ the King), and Jesse Collins (Golden Horn). Bikes were presented on Wednesday in front of Tim Horton's on Second Ave.

"I was happy and excited," said 12-year-old Collins when asked about his reaction to winning the bike.

For Collins, this year's Run for Mom fund-raiser became a little more personal when his mother was diagnosed with cancer in March.

Collins' response was to do as much as he could and get involved. In March he contacted the Terry Fox Foundation and by June had raised a total of $5,000.

Most of the money came from people living in Whitehorse and Marsh Lake, where he lives.

"The support he had was unreal," said his grandmother Florence Turcotte. "It was just so overwhelming."

Turcotte said it's "awesome" about Collins winning the bike.

"We truly are very proud of Jesse," she said. "He deserves it, if anybody does."

"He's really touched my heart because he is just so passionate about raising money because what his mom is going through right now," said Vicky Stallabrass, a Run For Mom committee member. "The other two kids certainly have worked hard to, but I know this is a more personal thing for Jesse."

After spending time in hospitals in Whitehorse and Vancouver, Collins' mom is back in Marsh Lake preparing for her final set of chemotherapy.
