An ’80s dance planned for this Saturday is aimed at raising funds for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) research.

The dance will be accompanied by a silent auction at Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre.

The event will kick off at 8 p.m. in the Grey Mountain Room, running until 1 a.m.

The fundraiser is meant to show support to Whitehorse’s Ross and Finn Beaulieu – teenaged brothers who suffer from DMD.

A group of locals will form Team Ross and Finn in next month’s Victoria Marathon, while Nathalie Dugas, Aisha Montgomery and Simon Lapointe will join Ross and Finn’s mother Michelle Beaulieu in running the New York City Marathon in November.

The goal is to raise $20,000 Saturday, Dugas said. Members of the community are welcome to attend.

DMD is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting one in every 3,500 boys. It results in a progressive loss of muscle strength, which leads to more serious problems relating to the heart and lungs.

At present, there is no cure.
