Roots, Freeman blaze to victory in 5K championships

Logan Roots was at his best Tuesday night.

The 22-year-old Whitehorse runner earned another Yukon title at the five-kilometre championships, running the Millennium Trail loop in a brisk 15:56.

Yukon MP Ryan Leef finished second in 17:35, while Jeff Larsen was third in 18:33.

Cynthia Freeman was the top female runner, crossing the finish line in 24:16, ahead of Laura Salmon (25:13) and Sonia Seeber (25:30).

The race started and finished at F.H. Collins Secondary School.

A total of 27 runners and walkers took part in the event, hosted by Athletics Yukon.

Last year’s champions – Kieran Halliday and Amelia Fraser – did not participate.

The next event on the Athletics Yukon calendar is the Atlin Mini Marathon, scheduled for this Saturday in conjuction with the Atlin Music Festival.

The 11th annual Mount Lorne Mis-Adventure Cross-Country Run is scheduled for July 19.
