GOING STRONG - A Red Rockets player skates down the ice with the puck during the Whitehorse Women's Hockey League championship game on Thursday.

Players on the Red Rockets saved one of their best games for last in Thursday's Whitehorse Women's Hockey League final.
A goal in the opening frame, followed by two more in the third period was all Red needed in its 3-2 victory over a very persistent White Team.
"It's nice to be on a winning team," said Rockets defenceman Amanda Ford. "This was one of the best games we have played all year. White Team played amazing, it was actually the toughest team we played all year, so much fun."
The White Team came out strong early on in the first period. During that time, the squad kept Rockets goalie Sharon Specht on her toes, sending a number of shots in her direction. Specht, however, was more than up for the challenge and not only made the saves, but limited the rebounds as well.
With the halfway point of the period approaching, Chantal Rivest got Red's offense going, putting the first puck in at 11:03. The goal was scored on a wrist shot that eluded White goalie Nancy Pumphrey.
Both goalies made a few more saves to maintain a 1-0 score for the remainder of the opening 20 minutes.
The White Team, down, but certainly not out, flexed its own offensive muscle in the second period. Georgie Townrow took advantage of a scramble in front of the Rocket's net to tie the game up at 1-1. Townrow's goal was assisted by Darcy Whiten.
Her goal was the only one scored in the second frame.
With the game tied 1-1 after 40 minutes, all the pieces were in place for a thrilling conclusion.
It didn't take long for the Rockets to restore the team's lead which, for a second straight time, came off the stick of Chantal Rivest. Her goal, scored less than two minutes into the final frame, was assisted by her mother, Cheryl.
In a nice play, Chantal nearly added to her team's lead, spinning around a White defenceman to get a shot off that forced Pumphrey to make a tough save.
Continued pressure eventually led to a third Rockets goal, sent in, once again, by Chantal.
Amongst a crowd in front of the net and with her back towards Pumphrey, Chantal got a stick on the puck, sending it in on a back-hander.
The goal, assisted by Jennifer Russel, turned out to be a huge one for the Rockets, who conceded another goal to White with less than three minutes remaining on the clock.
The final goal of the game was scored by Nancy Campbell, who skated in and blew a lightening quick wrist shot by Specht.
The Rockets bench was still in high spirits, despite giving up a late goal, and cheered enthusiastically once play resumed.
With less than one minute remaining in the first period, Team White went on the power play, but the Rockets played it perfectly and didn't allow a single shot on goal.
Thursday's game ended with a Team White possession in their own end of the ice.
"It was a fun season," said Cheryl Rivest, a forward on the Rockets. "The emphasis was to include everybody, it was to have a team, so a team in every sense of the word."
Despite just winning the league, Rivest said her highlight on the season was playing on the same team as her daughter.
"It's the very first time that we have been on a team together throughout the season and to win it together was great," she said.
Team White managed to qualify for the final, earlier in the week, after winning a thrilling playoff match against Team Black. With the game deadlocked, sniper Anna Pugh netted the winner in the final minute of play to give her team a 2-1 win.
"She saved the team," said Team White player Joanie Pelletier about Pugh's late game heroics in the semi-final.
Pelletier, who finished with one assist on Thursday, said she wasn't disappointed about losing the game.
"I never thought I would have made it to the final," she said. "We did it and we were the last team of the league, so I am pretty impressed.
"We don't give up and I think that's why we made it to the final because we are all kind of average, beginner players and we made it."
