Roadhouse didn't lose a single game in this years' Bob Park Ice Breaker Broomball Tournament, winning the competition for the second year in a row.
The team went 7-0 in the tournament, including a 2-0 victory over the Whitehorse Dental Donkeys in Sunday's final at the Takhini Arena.
'Today's final was tough,' said Jay Glass, the team's goalie. 'The final score was 2-0, but it was 0-0 for the longest time then 1-0, so it was close and it could have went either way. We got kind of lucky on a few chances.'
Roadhouse caught a break on the very first shot by the Dental Donkeys, which went by Glass to hit the post. The team took advantage of their good luck, scoring within the first 10 minutes of game and carrying most of the play throughout the first period. The goalie for the Dental Donkeys kept his team in the game though and made a number of key saves right up until the end of the period.
It was in the second frame where the Donkeys were able to shift the momentum. The team came out strong and maintained their dominance for the entire course of the period, forcing Glass to make a number of difficult saves. Glass stood his ground though and maintained his team's one goal lead into the third and final period. Josh Hirsh scored his second goal of the afternoon in the last 10 minutes of play, putting the game out of reach for the Dental Donkeys.
This was the first time Glass participated in the tournament and even played the game. He said having experience as a lacrosse goalie helped him throughout the tournament.
'I find it quite similar,' he said. 'It is definitely more similar to lacrosse than hockey because it's more of a possession game. You get the ball and you try to keep the ball; lacrosse is like that, hockey there is a few more turnovers.'
This tournament has been around for 15 years and is held over the course of three days. It is the official beginning of the broomball season and is held indoors because the ice on the league's facility in Takhini North isn't suitable for game play at this time of year.
Six teams participated in the tournament and seven will take part in the league, which should begin in a couple of weeks, depending on the weather. Five games were played by each team, including three on Saturday, and concluding on Sunday.
The top four teams qualified for the playoffs, which began at noon. The tournament is co-ed and anyone who is 16 and older can take part.
This tournament was re-named after the tragic death of long-time broomball player Bob Park, who passed away two years ago. Park was a player in the league for close to 20 years and the organizers of the tournament added his name to the official title in his honour.
This was the second annual Bob Park Ice Breaker Broomball Tournament.
Glass, who didn't have proper playing shoes, was given a pair that Park used to play the game with to wear throughout the tournament.
'Bob was a friend of mine and I didn't have shoes, so Crystal (Birmingham, Park's former partner) offered me to wear the shoes and I said sure',' he said. 'I was thinking about Bob during the games and maybe it brought us a little bit of luck. Maybe Bob was there with us in a way so to speak.'
Glass ended his first broomball tournament with an incredible five shutouts.
Birmingham has been playing in the tournament for five years and this was her second year playing on Roadhouse.
She said naming the tournament after Park was fitting.
'It was a sport that he loved and was really good at,' she said. 'It's just really fitting and it was the general consensus from everybody that they wanted to do something to attribute to him and so they thought naming this would be perfect.'
Birmingham said they were always on different teams when playing in the tournament.
'We always joked about never being on the same team and if I was going to continue I wanted to be playing on the team that he was a part of for so long, (15 years) there is a magic feel to it,' she said 'This is a great group and they are great friends and I feel lucky that they let me play with them.'
