Roadhouse hit the ice running in the team's opening contest to the 2008-09 broomball season on Wednesday against the Yukon News.

Despite the heroic efforts of substitute netminder Andrew Doon, the News ended losing 10-2 in what was, for the most part, a one-sided affair.

"It was a good first game, lots of fun," said Roadhouse player Diane Stewart. "Just to get out and start playing is good."

Doon, who was tested early and often, kept his team in the game for the majority of the contest, including the first half of the opening frame, which featured a scoreless draw.

However, 11 minutes into the game, Roadhouse ended the shutout streak on a goal by Rob Larose.

Larose netted the goal on the perfect pass from Rob Johnson and managed to send a hard shot into the far side of the net. The ball landed just inside the post.

The News had opportunities of its own, including a rush not long after Larose's goal. The rush included a nice move to get around the defender, who anticipated a shot, and ended with a scoring chance that forced Roadhouse goaltender, Ryan Hannah, to make a nice sprawling save.

Roadhouse went right back to work and the team was able to notch one more goal before time expired in the 20-minute period.

The squad's second goal was scored by Johnson, who worked the ball around the net and sent it up in a hurry into the top corner of the net.

Both netminders made several saves to maintain the score at 2-0 into the second frame.

Roadhouse kept the pressure on in the second and it didn't take long for them to increase the lead to 3-0.

The team's third goal was scored by Larose after the News had some trouble getting the ball out of its end.

Despite the three goal deficit, players on the News didn't give up hope and managed to get one of their own on a shot that hit the inside of the crossbar. The goal was scored by Chris Nash.

Nash showed off his skills on the News' second goal, using some fancy stick handling to get around a player on Roadhouse and then fired a quick shot past Hannah.

In the second half of the frame, Roadhouse added two more goals, including one that came seconds before the period ended.

Jody Linklater scored the two goals for Roadhouse, giving his team a 5-2 lead.

Five more goals were added to Roadhouse's total in the third period, putting the game out of reach for the News. Third period scorers included Cory McEachran, Johnson and Larose.

"Overall it makes you feel ecstatic," said Linklater about the win. "You want to keep going now, it's something to look forward to."

In other Broomball league results, Capital Towing & Auto Repair won handily over Builders Supplyland in the season opener on Monday.

Francois Lafortune led the way for Capital Towing with an impressive six point performance, netting a hat trick and adding three assists in the team's 8-0 win.

Megan Beauchesne scored a hat trick of her own and Erin Stehelin scored twice and contributed two assists.

Nadon, Roch added two assists and Gord Starko recorded the shutout for Capital Towing.

Meanwhile, the Yukon Broomball Association plans on forming another team, which would bring the league's total to an even six for the remainder of the season.

"I am optimistic that we can get more players for the league," said Yukon Broomball Association president Milford Allain. "We have had an influx this year, which has been awesome."

Allain said there was an increase of around 20 players in league this season, which was a 10 to 15 per cent rise from the numbers in 2007-08.

Currently, the new team has eight players, which includes mostly first-timers to the sport.

The team will be appropriately called the Rookies, but Allain said the name may change, depending on whether or not a corporate sponsor can be found.

He said the cutoff to join the team will be either Saturday or Sunday and those interested can phone him at 335-0534 or 393-3268.

Members in the league play at least twice a week at the broomball rink off Range Road. Membership costs $80 for the season, which goes until April.

There is also a deal that involves players paying $20, which guarantees them three games. If a player liked the sport after that, he or she could pay the remaining money owed on the season's membership.
