Record turnout for dryland dog mushing race; 27 teams participate

Anthills, a mud pit and more mosquitoes than anyone could count didn't stop the Hot Hounds race series from achieving a record turnout this past weekend.

Anthills, a mud pit and more mosquitoes than anyone could count didn't stop the Hot Hounds race series from achieving a record turnout this past weekend.

Twenty-seven teams braved some tough conditions and obstacles during the Yukon Meat and Sausage - the Deli Race, held at Stacie Zaychuk's, off the Alaska Highway.

The top three finishers in the pet dog category included Heather Desmarais with dog Keno. Desmarais time was 5:19, while Jonathan Lucas wasn't too far behind her, finishing with a time of 5:27.

Wendy Morrison placed third (7:52).


One Sled Dog

  1. Baby Jesus - Susie Rogan - 4:52.

  2. Nahanni - Cynthia Corriveau - 5:03.

  3. Ibex - Gaetan Pierrard - 5:03.

3 - Grizzly - Amil Dupois-Rossi - 5:06.


Two Sled Dogs

  1. Nemo and Hydro, Claudia Wickert - 4:28.

  2. Tippy and Coho, Darryl Sheepway - 4:28.

  3. Emma and Assman, Jon Lucas - 4:41.

  4. Banshee and Klein, Fabian Schmitz - 4:49.


Formula One

  1. Four dog Quad, Laura Jane Lucas - 6:44.

  2. Six dog Quad, Stacie Zaychuk - 12:22.

The next dryland mushing race is being held on July 25 at Drag n' Fly Kennel, off the Old Alaska Highway.
