The Chocolate Claim 10-Miler is a fixture on the running calendar.

For almost 20 years this event has been a rite of passage for those planning to participate in the Klondike Road Relay.

This year's edition of the 10-Miler featured a record turn out of 60 runners and walkers. It also saw many fast times with five runners completing the challenging course in under 65 minutes.

The Chocolate Claim course has three significant hills, including the first two hills on the Schwatka Lake Road.

The route begins and finishes at Rotary Park, follows the Riverwall portion of the Millennium Trail to the South Access Road and then down the Schwatka Lake Road to the Miles Canyon Road, over the suspension bridge in Miles Canyon and then back to Rotary Park, following the Chadburn Lake Road and Riverdale roads.

Rodney Hulstein, who won the half marathon portion of the Yukon River Trail Marathon three weeks ago, was the fastest man, crossing the finish line under the one-hour mark in 59:20.

Just over a minute behind Hulstein was the Karl Blattman (1:00:41), who shaved an amazing five minutes off his time from last year. Brent Langbakk (1:00:46), who has represented Canada at the World Orienteering Championships on five occasions, finished third just five seconds behind Blattman.

Teenage running force Logan Roots (1:03:11) was fourth, and law student Andrew Brown (1:04:00) rounded out the top five.

The women's division was a three-way contest that saw three fast runners finish within 35 seconds of one another.

Cindy Freeman (1:18:11) finished first, but she had the fleet Amy Riske (1:18:24) and the tenacious Janet Clarke (1:18:46) just behind her.

Multi-sport athlete Michelle Christensen (1:19:46), who has competed in and won countless races over the past two decades, finished fourth. Janet Hall (1:23:35) finished fifth.

Race walking speedsters Ruth Hall (1:59:29) and Bonnie Love (2:00:05) battled for

eight miles when Hall broke away and maintained a lead all the way to the finish line in Rotary Park.

Susan Dennehy (2:07:13), who is having a break-out season which will culminate with a half marathon in October, placed third. Catherine Simpson (2:08:51), a runner turned walker, placed fourth.
