It was nothing but good clean hockey on Saturday morning as the top-seeded Rebels and Inferno faced off in the women's final of the Rendezvous hockey tournament, and kicked off a day of top-quality entertainment for Whitehorse hockey fans.
It was nothing but good clean hockey on Saturday morning as the top-seeded Rebels and Inferno faced off in the women's final of the Rendezvous hockey tournament, and kicked off a day of top-quality entertainment for Whitehorse hockey fans.
Both teams entered the game with some handy wins; the Rebels were 3-0 and had a very healthy 31 points to their credit, while Inferno had two wins in three games.
Their sole loss came in the form of a 6-1 match against the Rebels during seeding.
At the start of the second period, the Rebels were leading 3-1, having notched their insurance goal during an end-of period hooking penalty to Inferno's Megan Moore.
The Rebels dominated in the first minutes of the second. First it was a beautiful goal at 20:05 from Shayla Roulston, who outmanoeuvred her defenders at the centre line and slid up the goalie's right side to pop it in.
Assists went to Cheryl Rivest and Tanya Ordish.
Less than a minute later, the Rebels did it again as Chantelle Rivest took an unassisted glory shot, putting her team four goals ahead. Inferno goalie Sharon Specht didn't get a moment to rest, and less than 30 seconds on the clock later Rebel Pam Harris got one in with help from Roulston and Cheryl Rivest.
Inferno returned from the flurry of goals with a strong offence and put Rebels goalie Alex Whitelaw to work, but two powerful shots went straight into Whitelaw's body, and the Rebels hustled it back to their end.
At 11:02, the Inferno's fire paid off with a goal from Taylor Doonan, assisted by her team's only other scorer in that game, Josee Charbonneau, but it wasn't enough to stop the tide of pucks coming at Specht's net. She managed to keep them out until Cheryl Rivest's line rushed her with four and half minutes remaining.
The first shot from Nancy Campbell went into the goalie's belly, and Specht thought she had it in her gloves.
There was a split second of silence as every player stopped skating and waited for the whistle before realizing the puck was on the ice between the goalie's skates.
Cheryl Rivest poked it in for the hat trick, and the final goal of the game.
Rebel Cheryl Rivest took home the crown for game MVP and the tourney's top scorer.
In addition to the hat trick and pair of assists earned in the final, Cheryl Rivest scored a total of five goals and six assists in the previous three game.
Rebel's goalie Alex Whitelaw got a hundred-dollar handshake and title of Top Goalie for her efforts between the posts.
