Rams beat Warriors 3-2 in girls supervolley

The Porter Creek Rams did not get off to a desired start Thursday in supervolley action. The Rams lost the first two sets to the F.H. Collins Warriors, before storming back to win the final three.

Playing in front of their home crowd, the Warriors started the first set firing on all cylinders, to jump out to an early 19-12 lead. The Rams made a late push but it was not enough to overcome their slow start. Last week’s player of the game, Peyton Twardochleb crushed a ball from the middle, and Emma Boyd aced the next serve to give the Warriors the first set.

The second set was a real battle, as both teams’ offences were in form. The set remained tight throughout, but the Warriors were able to convert on their chances winning the second set, 25-23, after Zoe Sage was able to find the hole in the block.

Down 0-2 the Rams came out firing in the third, led by player of the game Kendra Peters, who had a huge serving run to give the Rams an 18-7 lead. The Rams offence was unrelenting as they took the third 25-9.

Having regained the momentum, the Rams continued their offensive attack led by last week’s player of the game Sage Brown, who had booming swings, and huge blocks.

The Warriors made a late push after trailing 24-19, getting within striking distance, but Caelon Workman had other ideas as she rose up from the left-side to hammer a ball between the blockers to clinch the fourth set 25-22.

The fifth and final set started strong for both teams, as they traded early points, because of relentless defence and even better offence.

The Rams were able to give themselves some breathing room taking an 8-6 advantage, before the teams switched sides of the court.

The Rams grew their lead on the strong serving of Peters. Once she took to the back line, she did not relinquish her serve, as the Rams took the fifth and deciding set 15-10.

Boys go the distance

The boys game also went to five sets, with the Rams able to pull it out in five. Warriors setter Griffin Bisson won player of the game.
