The Porter Creek Rams senior girls volleyball team capped a spectacular season with their third gold medal win Saturday afternoon.

The Rams defeated the Vanier Crusaders in two sets to win the Yukon championships – securing the third jewel necessary to complete their triple crown season.

Earlier this year, the Rams won gold at the Dawson Invitational Volleyball Tournament, and also claimed gold in the local Super Volley series.

The latest gold medal also marks the third straight year the Porter Creek senior girls have emerged victorious at the Yukon championships.

The Rams’ final victory came relatively easily, as they dispatched the Crusaders with scores of 25-15 and 25-13 at F.H. Collins Secondary School.

“It’s definitely been a strong season for them,” Rams coach Amy Palamar told the Star post-game. “They’ve worked really hard and won a lot of games.”

Palamar said her group’s energy and tenacity got them started down the road to success.

“A triple crown win is what we wanted,” she said. “It’s the ultimate dream. It’s been a battle and it means so much.

“I’m super proud of the girls. When we started, they were a group of individuals, but ending the season they’re a team. Their unity is spectacular.”

Rams setter Hannah Milner was named tournament MVP, while teammates Sam Wintemute and Tayla McNally received all-star nods.

Rounding out the tournament all-star team were Olivia Holmes (Dawson), Avery Bramadat (F.H.), Jiela Tobias (Vanier) and Chloe Turner-Davis (Vanier).

Milner, 17, said the triple crown opportunity had her feeling butterflies.

“We were really nervous that they would take our triple crown away,” the Grade 12 student said of their rival Crusaders. “We played really hard to get to where we are ... It’s really exciting. It feels amazing.”

Other members of Porter Creek’s dream team were: Emma Hoogland, Vanessa Fischer, Teah Dickson, Aly Wiens, Ashley Lai, Erin Hochn and Reanna Newsome.

Crusaders coach Terri Park said her squad gave it their best shot.

“There was a lot of depth on this team,” she said. “There was some really strong players and leaders.

“Our defence could have stepped it up a bit,” she said of the final. “Our coverage was a little slow at times. Really it came down to that. We weren’t picking up those dumps to the middle as quickly as we should have.”

Dawson City won bronze.
