The second night of the Yukon Senior High School Basketball Championships saw the Porter Creek Rams face off against the F.H. Collins Warriors, in a rematch of the Super Hoops final on Tuesday.
In the girls' game, neither team could build much of a lead on the other; each of the first three quarters ended with one team leading by two points or less. In a nail-biter, P.C. had the stronger fourth quarter and won the game 62-59.
The Warriors have had success all season with a fast, aggressive, opportunistic defence. Porter Creek's strategy to use this aggressiveness to get F.H. in foul trouble almost backfired as they had their coldest free-throw shooting game of the season.
Instead, the Rams had to rely on their outside shooting and strong finishing. The Warriors matched every basket with strong inside play and numerous steals for easy lay-ups.
At the end, P.C. player of the game Kendra Thomson scored six straight points, including two free throws with the score tied and less than thirty seconds left, to lift her team to the win.
Playing her final game of the season, Thomson collected a total of 29 points in an MVP performance to guarantee her team a spot in the finals on Saturday night. Young Krista Mooney complimented Thomson nicely, scoring 13 points. Rams guard Michelle Dawson had another strong game, draining 10 points.
For the Warriors, senior guard May Nguyen did just about everything she could do, picking up 20 points. Nguyen has dominated high school basketball for the past two seasons and is looking for her first Yukon championship.
Forwards Noria Deacon and Kathy Sutherland were effective inside, as they have been all season. Deacon scored 18 points and Sutherland added 14.
On Wednesday, F.H. Collins took on Vanier in the final round-robin game. The score of that contest was not available by press time. Those two teams will have a re-match Friday, with the winner moving on to play Porter Creek in the final Saturday.
Both the semifinal and final will be played at F.H. Collins.
Meanwhile, the Porter Creek Rams senior boys' basketball team also clinched a spot in Saturday's final, thanks to a big win over F.H. Collins Tuesday.
The Warriors will meet Vanier in the semifinal Friday, with the winner advancing to play Porter Creek.
