For the third year in a row the Ramblin Rowdies took home the 8-ball league championship at Porter Creek Billiards Pub and Pool this past weekend.

The team, formed of Gord Arndt, Rick Hull, Paul Getson and Don MacKenzie accumulated 827 points over the three-week playoffs.

The second place team, led by John Rogers, Dave Barrett, Jeremy Scott and Jon L were just 11 points behind with 816 points.

With ten teams participating in the league, only 108 points separated first and last place.

"The point difference shows how close the teams are in their abilities,” said Getson.

"We have a lot of good players.”

The league is now in it's fifth season and regular season play wrapped up on March 15.

"It was a very close finish,” said Getson of the championship round.

"I thought we had a chance but I wasn't sure until the last couple of games that we were going to be able to win it all.”

MacKenzie, who has been playing pool for 40 years, attributed the win to the team's experience.

"We've been playing for a long time,” he said. "Most of us are pretty experienced.

"There's several really good teams and it's a lot of fun. It's a social event and that makes it enjoyable, it's not terribly over-competitive. I've seen places where it can be pretty rabid but it's usually a fun evening with friendly competitiveness.”

MacKenzie said he had an off-night in the finals but the team was able to compensate with their strong play.

"I was quite surprised with the win,” he said. "I think I had my worst night of the season in the final game but we still pulled it out. The other guys stepped up and picked up the slack.”

In last year's final, after winning the final game, the Rowdies escaped with a one point victory.

"No one expected us to win it last year,” said Getson. "If our last guy hadn't won his game, we would have been out a few points.”

The scoring system is based on a team handicap. Each ball is worth one point except for the 8-ball, which is worth three.

The playoffs are broken down into a 32 game series with each member of the team playing two games per opponent for a total of eight games each.

"It's a good league and it's well organized,” said MacKenzie.

Porter Creek Billiards Pub and Pool is a member of the Canadian Cue Sport Association (CCS), a non-profit that operates the sanctioning of pool leagues across the country. The CCS is also partnered with the American Cue Sports Alliance with its members competing in the annual US National Championships in Las Vegas.

Last year the league sent several players to Calgary to compete in the Western Canadian Billiards Championships, including MacKenzie who was able to bring home some cash after winning in the 8-ball division.

Next year, the league is planning to participate in another Calgary tournament and possibly compete in Las Vegas as well.

"It was a good season, there's a lot of good players and teams in town and a lot of young up and comers too,” said MacKenzie.

"Every year we have some different people but there's a core group that seems to stay the same, the long-time Yukon residents that play every year like myself.

"It's a lot of fun.”

The summer league is schedule to begin on May 9, with games happening every Wednesday night until September 2.
