The Yukon gymnastics championships were held this past weekend at the Polarettes Gymnastics Club in Whitehorse.

Twenty-five athletes took part in the championships, two of them from Alaska.

Local gymnastics Shaun Porter and Tony Nguyen, who recently competed at the Western gymnastics championships held in Whitehorse, moved up from Level 4 to Level 5 for this competition. Coach Kelly Mock said it was in preparation for the national championships, which are being held in Missasauga, Ontario, the first week of June.

'They are the first boys ever from the Yukon to go to nationals,' said Mock in an interview this morning. 'We've sent girls before, but never boys.'

Mock said while he expects the boys to perform well, he doesn't expect any medals.

'They're going more for thier first nationals experience, in preparation for the (2007) Canada Games,' he said, adding the boys will need to be in Level 6 at Canada Games.

'It's a pretty big jump really,' admitted Mock. 'So we're working our way up over the next couple of years.'

The coach said Porter and Nguyen will remain in Level 5 for the next year-and-a-half to two years, then make the next step the year before the Games. Next year, he hopes to have two more boys from the local club join Porter and Nguyen at nationals, as well as two girls in 2006, all in preparation for the 2007 Games, which will be held in Whitehorse.
