Porter Creek dominates Yukon junior basketball championships
The Yukon's up-and-coming basketball talent was showcased in Whitehorse this past weekend, as the Grade 8 and Grade 9/10 basketball champions were decided.
The Yukon's up-and-coming basketball talent was showcased in Whitehorse this past weekend, as the Grade 8 and Grade 9/10 basketball champions were decided.
Twelve teams competed in the 9/10 championships, three of them from communities outside of the capital, with boys and girls action in both grade divisions starting Thursday evening and running through until Saturday.
The Porter Creek Rams took three of four titles awarded, including both boys and girls Grade 9/10 championships.
The Rams took on F.H. in the boys final, overpowering the Warriors 60-38. Sam Johnson was the high-scorer for P.C., draining 15 points, while Sina Kazemi added 11. Dennis Sinah replied for F.H. with 13.
The following players were named to the All-Star squad for the 9/10 boys: Robin Cunningham, F.H.; Willy Dickson, Watson Lake; Tony Weibe, Vanier; Sam Johnson, P.C.; and Zac Carey, P.C.
Vanier finished third in the Grade 9/10 boys division.
P.C.'s Kazemi was named tournament MVP.
In the Grade 9/10 girls final, it was P.C. facing off against Vanier. The Rams pulled out a 50-28 victory, led by Kaeli Ritchie with 14 points and Jasmine Mooney with 10. Noria Deacon picked up 11 points for the Crusaders.
The following players were named to the All-Star squad for the 9/10 girls: May Nguyen, F.H.; Danielle Houser, Watson Lake; Noria Deacon, Vanier; Jasmine Mooney, P.C.; Sherry Kostelnik, P.C.
F.H. took third place in the girls 9/10 category.
The Rams' Ritchie was named tournament MVP.
In Grade 8 boys action, it was F.H. Collins versus Vanier for the gold. F.H. narrowly defeated Vanier 41-35 to take the title. No top scorers were provided for either team, but the following athletes were named to the All-Star team: Cody Lafleur, P.C.; Tyler (no last name given), Teslin; Cody Fraser, Vanier; Dustin Myah, Vanier; and Afshin Amirtabar, F.H.

And in the Grade 8 girls final, it was a battle between two Porter Creek crews, with P.C. white pulling out a 40-30 victory over P.C. red. Amanda (no last name given) was the top-scorer for the white side with nine points while Emily and Zara (no last names given) each tacked on seven. Ally and Kendra (no last names given) replied for the red squad with seven points each.
The following players were named to the All-Star team: Ceildh Bailey, F.H.; Kelsey Toosinault, Vanier; Sarah Jarvis, P.C. red; Kayla Willis, P.C. white; and Daphnee Touslak, P.C. white.
Vanier walked away with third place in Grade 8 girls action.
P.C. white's Emily Fedoriak was named tournament MVP.
Meanwhile, round-robin play began for the senior basketball teams, with three games taking place on the weekend. In the first boys match-up, the Rams took on the Warriors, with P.C. downing F.H. 86-56.
Rob Driscol-McKinnon posted 28 points for the Rams while Ben Ryan had 16. Max Kelly grabbed 18 points for the Warriors. In the other boys game, Vanier defeated Watson Lake but no information was available.
Vanier claimed a 46-34 decision over F.H. in the girls match. Roslyn Taite and Kim Carter led Vanier with nine and eight points respectively. Amanda Brown had 21 points for F.H. in the losing cause.
Round-robin action continues for the seniors tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday, with finals taking place Wednesday night at Vanier Catholic Secondary School.
