Thirty nine gymnasts from Whitehorse and Juneau participated in the Yukon Championships Sunday.
“I think it ran very smoothly considering our head coach is out of town,” assistant coach Megan Banks explained in an interview this morning. “I think it went smoothly and the girls did very well.”
Banks said what stood out for her was how well everybody was vaulting.
“They were some of the best vaults I have seen from the group, and that was good,” she said.
Ages of the gymnasts ranged from seven to 12, and judging was carried out by local volunteers who have experience with the Polarettes Gymnastics Club.
Most of the gymnasts, 29 of them, were from the Polarettes club.
Each year Whitehorse gymnasts travel to Juneau for their meet and Juneau participates in the Yukon Championships.
Banks noted the performance of Whitehorse gymnast Lily Witten, a 10-year-old who competed with the 11- and 12-year-olds in the level seven category, the highest age category on the weekend.
With promising potential, Witten is part of the Aspire program put together by Gymnastics Canada.
She placed third among the four level seven gymnasts, after finishing second in the vault, third on the uneven bars, second on the beam and fourth in the floor exercises.
“She did very well,” Banks said. “She had one of her best floor routines, and I was very proud of how she made it through her bar routine.”
Polarette Maude Molgat finished first in the all-around category for level seven, after placing first in the vault, first on the bars, first on the beam and third on the floor.
In the level six category, also for 11- and 12-year-olds, Polarette Kalina Morrison finished first in the all-around category, after placing fifth in the vault, first on the bars, third on the beam and third on the floor.
Of the seven gymnasts in the level four class for 10- and 11-year-olds, six were from Juneau but it was Polarette gymnast Kate Koepke who finished first all-around with a first on the vault, first on bars, first on the beam and fourth on the floor.
Group A in the level three class was won by Polarette MacKenzie Tonner with first-place performances on the vault and bars, second on the beam and third on the floor.
Polarette Amelie Guilbeault won in group B with after finishing first on the vault and floor and second on the bars and beam.
In the level two class of seven- to nine-year-olds, Polarette Wylloh Dinn finished first after placing first on the floor and second in vault, beam and bars.
In the level one category for seven- and eight-year-olds, Polarette Payten Kinney finished first in the all-round category, after placing first on the floor and beam, and second in the vault and bars.
