The Whitehorse Women’s Hockey Association continues to blossom in popularity.

The 2014/15 season got underway Friday with 115 registered players on seven teams – six of which have sponsors.

“We actually had more than enough goalies this year, which we’re really happy about,” said current league president Joelle Hodgins.

The league’s humble beginnings date back to 2005, when it began with just two teams – black and white.

Those jerseys – adorned with flames trickling up the sleeves – remain in use today.

The league’s board does its best to promote a fun-loving atmosphere for players of all skill-sets.

“We’ve done a lot to cater to newcomers,” said Hodgins. “I think it is kind of just the atmosphere of it. It’s not so competitive but still a good calibre.”

Last season, North Star Mini Storage Grey Matter earned the 2014 women’s hockey league title with a 2-1 victory over White Storm.

This year’s team sponsors include H&R Block, Jill Pollack & Co., Thomas Electric Ltd., Burnt Toast Cafe, Cardinal Contracting and North Star Mini Storage.

Burnt Toast, led by rookie goaltender Chris Blodgett, currently owns the league’s top spot with a 2-0 record.

They beat H&R Block 3-2 in Friday’s season opener at the Canada Games Centre, before beating Jill Pollack & Co. 4-1 Saturday.

Prior to the season, league brass hosted two “really successful” clinics led by star players Sasha Merrell and Amy Vermeulen, said Hodgins.

The clinics were focused on general hockey skills such as shooting, passing and stickhandling.

It marked the first time the league zeroed in on puck possession skills, rather than simple power skating, Hodgins noted.

Meanwhile, the league’s annual jamboree tournament is slated to occur next month, rather than in December.

Registration for the Nov. 14 to 15 event should begin soon.

On top of the jamboree, a variety of tournaments are expected to take place in the communities this season, including Dawson City, Haines Junction and Watson Lake.

In recent years, local women’s hockey teams have also strung together some spectacular performances at spring hockey tournaments in Calgary.
