Players on Roche Firth Marchuk Financial will attempt to put an end to a common belief in the Tuesday Night Squash League next week.

Roche finished on top in the standings and is hoping to end a lengthy streak of the first place upsets in the league, which is commonly referred to around the league as "The Curse of First."

On Tuesday, Roche narrowly defeated fourth place MEADIAsolutions, winning by a single point.

The team will take on third place Pizza Hut, which defeated Assante by a convincing 20-10 score.

Michel Gelinas was the leading scorer for Roche, chipping in six points, while the team also received help from its three other members Patrick Gardinar, Doug Thorseth and substitute player Danny Johnson.

Peter Mathur and Trevor Mead-Robins led the way for MEADIAsolutions, combining for 12 points. Mark Tubman also played well, scoring the team's remaining two points.

The squash league included a different format this week, using points a rally system (PARS).

PARS gives whoever wins a rally a point regardless of whether a player served or not. The old system was different, awarding a point only when a player was serving.

Each individual game went up to 15, but all players are required to win by at least a two-point margin.

Matches in the Tuesday Night Squash League feature a best of five game format.

Terri Cairns, Jim Gilpin and Jeff Seaman each scored six points for Pizza Hut, while Chris Ziegler finished with two points.

Glenn Rudman scored the most points for Assante, finishing with six, while teammates Richard Meredith and substitute player William Papenfus each scored two.

Gilpin, who has been involved with the squash league for more than a decade, is a believer in the "The Curse of First" and likes his team's chances heading into the final.

"Statistically, I think that's true, because I don't know if any team who has finished the regular season in first having won in the final," he said. "I would put money on our team, if we were going to put any wagers."
