Rachel Pettitt has picked up right where she left off last season.
Fresh off a national novice figure skating championship, the 16-year-old Whitehorse native has already achieved her goals for this season – only to set the bar even higher.
Pettitt, who now trains in Kelowna, B.C., has participated in four meets so far this season, collecting a variety of medals and personal-best performances.
In July, she travelled to Anaheim to participate in the 2015 Glacier Falls Summer Classic.
There, she crushed her previous personal-best long program score by almost 15 points with a flawless skate.
“My goal this season was to get at least 125 points (combined score), and I achieved that there,” Pettitt told the Star this week.
Her total score in Anaheim rang up at over 130 points.
“That was exciting,” she said. “It makes me want to work even harder in my next competitions so I can achieve an even higher score than that.”
She went on to record a personal-best short program score at SummerSkate 2015 in Burnaby, B.C., last month, en route to a bronze medal win.
She also struck gold at a Washington-based meet in June.
Pettitt is skating to brand-new programs this season – her first as a junior. Her skates include six triple jumps.
Pettitt was the first skater in Yukon history to strike gold at nationals in January. She went on to claim a second national gold the following month at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C.
She isn’t the only Yukon figure skater currently creating a buzz in the sport, however.
Pairs skater Bryn Hoffman is currently in Torun, Poland, with her skating partner Bryce Chudak, competing on the Junior Grand Prix circuit.
Pettitt’s next competition will take place next month in Chilliwack, B.C.
She will be joined at the event, known as Autumn Leaves, by Arctic Edge teammates Tessa Moore and Alissa Russell.
