Perrier sparkles early; Campbell rejoins RiverKings

While one Yukon pro hockey player is excelling in Sweden, another is simply looking for a steady job in the United States.

Yukon goalie Ian Perrier has started every game so far for Sweden’s Åmåls Sportklubb, a Division 2 team.

The 24-year-old has backstopped the team to a 2-2 record, with a 3.02 GAA and .922 save percentage.

“Things are going well so far,” Perrier told the Star. “From a team perspective, we’ve really started to come together and string some high quality performances together.”

Individually, Perrier said he’s worked hard to earn the confidence of the coaching staff.

“After making some adjustments to my game, I’ve been able to adapt to the style of play here,” he said. “According to the coach, it’s been over a decade since this team has had a goalie with a save percentage above .900.

“I’m currently atop the leaderboard amongst goalies and will continue to work and establish myself in Sweden.”

The six-foot-two, 190-pound Whitehorse native is the first Yukon goalie to play professional hockey.

Meanwhile, news out of South Carolina Stingrays camp indicates Haines Junction native Reid Campbell has been cut loose by the club.

The 26-year-old defenceman made the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) team out of training camp, but did not dress for either of the first two games.

Campbell has since been thrown a lifeline by the Southern Professional Hockey League’s Mississippi RiverKings, where he spent last season.

Campbell has rejoined the Mississippi club, a team official told the Star. The RiverKings’ season gets underway tonight.

In 45 games last season, Campbell scored twice and added nine assists, finishing at plus-nine.

The five-foot-10, 185-pound blue-liner did not return messages to the Star before press time today.

To date, Campbell’s foray into professional hockey has been stunted by injuries – including a concussion.

Finally, Whitehorse native Jordan Lane has taken a step back from hockey this year, choosing instead to attend firefighting school at College of the Rockies in Kimberley, B.C.

The six-foot-eight, 250-pound forward last plyed his trade as an enforcer with the Quad City Mallards of the Central Hockey League in 2013-2014.

Last fall, the 26-year-old failed to crack the Bakersfield Condors lineup out of training camp.

The Condors were affiliated with the ECHL.

Lane said he will reevaluate his career before next season.
