Stephen Mooney showcased his skills at the Second Annual Icebreaker Canoe and Kayak Race, setting a new overall record with a time of 2:00:37.

It was a neck-and-neck finish for Mooney, who just managed to beat out Greg McHale by slightly more than one minute.

Eighteen canoers and kayakers participated this year in the 28-km race. The race course went from from Marsh Lake dam to Schwatka Lake and was hosted by the Yukon Canoe and Kayak Club.

The event was sponsored by Up North Adventures, who provided the shuttle to the headwaters of the Yukon and the prizes.

Despite the low water conditions, Mooney was able to shatter last year's course record several minutes in his racing sea kayak.

Only three seconds behind Mooney was a five person, all-Yukon voyageur team and coming in behind them was Greg McHale. The Yukon voyageur team was able to hunt down McHale despite missing one of their members, who had to withdraw because of injury.

McHale finished with an overall time of 2:01:38.

Several of the racers involved were using this as training for the upcoming Yukon River Quest on June 25th.

Jane Vincent and Alison Morham locked down fourth place in the tandem canoe event with their time of 2:34:00. The time was a new women's canoe record.

Denise McHale, who used the sea kayak, set a new women's kayak record at 2:34:30. Denise placed fifth overall at the race.

Pat McKenna and Elizabeth Bosely competed in the tandem canoe category. The two finished just a few minutes behind Denise, coming in at 2:37:25 to secure the sixth position in the standings.

The Team Alaska Voyageur finished seventh with the time of 3:08:06. The voyager canoe was made up of Bob Funk, Eric Nelson, Nancy Jones, Mike O'Daniel, Jeff Brady and Dave Sevdy.
