CARMACKS — Favourable weather conditions on Lake Laberge resulted in fewer scratches by this morning than last year.
Aside from the two teams who did not start the race, “Koo Koo Sint” and “Northstar,” there was just one scratch by 10:30 this morning.
After getting past Lake Laberge, Graham Sutherland of solo kayak team “Yukiwi” had a wrist injury that was getting too sore.
Peter Coates, a YRQ volunteer, said that Sutherland did not fit in the kayak he originally rented, and was forced to switch to a heavier one.
“He was probably working harder,” Coates said.
The 47-year-old is expected to arrive in Carmacks this afternoon by safety boat.
While the lake conditions were pleasant, there is still a chance that racers could overheat in the sunny weather and become dehydrated or get hypothermia.
