The broomball postseason began Saturday and those in attendance at the broomball arena were treated to exciting action and plenty of extra play to boot. Two of the three games went into extended overtime periods leaving some tired legs at the end of the day.

The first game was the Yukon Brewing side taking on the Sports Experts in a battle of the four-five seeds.

The game lived up to its billing being a close back and forth affair. The teams traded goals in the first two periods but neither side was able to break the deadlock before the buzzer rang to end regulation.

Each team had odd-man rushes and breakaways in OT as well as prolonged zone control but after so much extra time their legs started to leave them.

Finally, halfway through the third OT frame, a Yukon Brewing forward got out behind the defenders. Breaking down the left side he unleashed a shot hard and low on the ice which went five-hole on the Sports Expert goalie.

The second game of the day saw Ridge Pub take on the P&M Crushers in a three-six match up.

Both teams had their chances but were unable to put one past the goalies in regulation.

The Ridge Pub goalie had an acrobatic save near the end of regulation to keep the game tied going into overtime.

In the four-on-four overtime frame, the Pub got the first good scoring chance when their defenceman got out for a breakaway but was unable to slide it past the Crushers goalie.

It wasn’t until the second OT that the Crushers get their opportunity on a breakaway.

The Pub goalie stopped the first shot, but the rebound just trickled over the line.

The underdogs wearing their St. Patrick’s Day green got the win 1-0.

Ridge Pub assistant captain Julie Pruden believes her team did great despite the warm conditions.

“I think we played hard and had a lot of fun despite the fact it was a tough game because the warm weather had made the ice extremely slippery,” said Pruden. “It felt like we were trying to run on oil.”

Despite her team’s loss, Pruden believes they will come out strong in their next game.

“I think we are going to do what we always do,” said Pruden. “Go out and give 110 per cent and have a lot of fun doing it. We are a running team so will just keep trying to run.”

Pruden says the Ridge Pub team always has the most fun at the games and that it is important to their success.

“If we aren’t laughing we are cheering each other on,” said Pruden. “It is always a fun bench full of smiles.”

In the final game of the day, the Fireweed Shooters squared off against the Yukon Thunder.

The Shooters didn’t need an extra frame to get the job done. They put up four unanswered goals to advance in the bracket and will now play the P&M Crushers.

The Thunder, the Pub and the Sports Experts will face elimination from the playoffs in their next games.
