The Yukon Outdoors Club is preparing for its first trip of the 2009 spring season.
The organization has a day-hike planned for May 24 to Sheep Mountain in Kluane Park, which is ranked as moderate in terms of difficulty.
"It gets a little steep and it can be a little onerous for some who haven't hiked before. We tend to rate them, I guess, a little bit higher than what (Whitehorse and Area) Hikes and Bikes might rate them, just so people aren't going beyond their level of ability," said Rob McClure, member of the Yukon Outdoors Club. "I guess the thing about the club is a lot of people do join and then they meet other people."
McClure said the group occasionally has trips in winter, but the main activities during those months are potlucks. Most of the outings are held in spring and fall.
Other trips this year include going to the Yukon River Bridge on May 31 and Sturgill's landing in Skagway on June 7. Recently the association held a trip leader workshop, which went over responsibilities of a leader. Responsibilities include knowing the route and good organization and planning skills. McClure said at least five people are needed to go on a day-hike.
Yukon Outdoors membership costs $10 per person or $15 for a family. The group has had as many as 120, but usually averages 60 to 80.
Age ranges usually include people in their early 20s to senior citizens.
