SEASON OPENER – The Yukon Orienteering Association kicked off the season with a downtown meet May 4 at Shipyards Park. This year there is a coach for the junior program from the Canadian National Orienteering team. Emma Waddington is a lifelong orienteer from Hamilton, Ont, and is coaching here until the end of July.

The first orienteering meet of 2021 was held at Shipyards Park on Wednesday evening.

A total of 61 members came out to enjoy brisk, mostly sunny running along the waterfront south to the Yukon Government Main Administration Building.

We have participants in strollers up to 80+ in age. This was an urban sprint race, meaning that the courses were not as technically challenging as forest orienteering, but tested speed and endurance as the courses got longer.

It was good to see some of our juniors taking on longer courses.

Hopefully, the snow will melt out of the woods soon and we can get back to running there as well.

Thank you to all our volunteers helping with course setup, take-down, and registration.

The next race (also a Sprint race) will be on May 12. Come out and join us! Watch for the location at  http://yukonorienteering.ca.
