Six Yukon orienteers were in action on Tuesday, competing in the first of two qualifying races for the classic distance event at the World Masters Games in Edmonton.

Nesta Leduc and Ross Burnett both posted top-ten finishes in the qualifier.

Leduc was racing in the women's 70-74 category, running over a 2.9 kilometre course, and crossed the line in fourth place.

Burnett was competing in the tough men's 45-49 category, where he finished ninth. He was also the top Canadian on that group's 6.5 kilometre course.

Other Yukoners taking part in the qualifier were Barbara Scheck, Juri Peepre, Sarah Locke and Lars Fossum.

Scheck was 23rd in the women's 45-49 category, which involved a 4.8 km course, while Peepre completed the men's 50-54 group one course, which was 5.6 km long, in 26th spot.

The second qualifier goes Thursday, with the finals slated for Saturday.

The combined times of both qualifiers will decide who makes what final the top group will compete in the A final while the bottom group will face off in the B final.

Meanwhile, results from Sunday's cycling road race are finally available. Three Yukoners were taking part in the event Ross Phillips, Marcus Waterreus and Mike McCann which covered 77 km.

Competing in the men's 35-39 category, Phillips was part of a huge pack that crossed the finish with the same time just one second behind the winner, with a time of 1:55:19. The rankings, though, left Phillips in 32nd place.

Waterreus encountered the same problem, completing the men's 40-44 course with a strong pack which was two minutes and 45 seconds behind the leader. Twenty-six riders, from 14th place to 39th, posted the same time. Waterreus ended up in 37th.

McCann was racing in the men's 55-59 category, but failed to complete the course.

In action today at the World Masters Games, the Yukon Gold hockey team (0-2) is taking on the Prime Evils (1-1).

Also, swimmer Tim Arnholz will be back in the pool.
