It's Orienteering Week in Canada, and Whitehorse celebrated in a huge way, with 81 people coming out to the first Wednesday night meet held yesterday.

Meet director, and accomplished orienteerer, Nesta Leduc set up three different courses, one for juniors, intermediates and advanced orienteerers, on the Riverdale sprint map.

Each course started from the Selkirk Elementary School parking lot and was set between F.H. Collins Secondary School, Vanier Catholic Secondary School, Selkirk and Christ the Kind Elementary School.

The trail zig-zagged, causing the orienteerers to be careful to check their directions often.

The novice category saw Pia Blake come in ahead of her fellow competitors on the 1.8-kilometre trail in a time of 11:12.

In the intermediate category, which was 2.2-km, competitors had to leave the set trails to get to each point. The first in was Georgi Pearson in a time of 22:23.

In the advanced course, Brent Langbakk came in first over the 3.6-km trail in a time of 17:55.

The next Wednesday night meet will be held in two weeks on May 19 starting from the Long Lake day use area at 6:30 p.m.
