Orienteerers in Whitehorse now have a new permanent course to practice on at Miles Canyon.

The course follows the Miles Canyon orienteering map with 30 controls set up.

The controls vary in difficulty, and anyone is welcome to participate and use the course. Biking, walking running and any other mode of transportation is welcome. Dogs are welcome on the trail as well.

To celebrate the launch of the new course, the Recreation and Parks Association of the Yukon has donated small prizes for anyone who visits at least 10 of the controls. Anyone who visits 20 controls will be entered twice, and those who visit all 30 controls will be entered in the draw three times.

The course can be started from anywhere along the Miles Canyon Road. Suggested starting points include the Miles Canyon Bridge, Chadburn ski trails or Canyon city parking lots.

The Miles Canyon course will be set up until the middle of July. Afterwards Yukon Orienteering hope to set up another permanent course on a different orienteering map.

To get started on the course, a map and punch card can be found at the Yukon Orienteering website online at www.yukonorienteering.ca/permanentcourse.html

Upcoming events on the Yukon Orienteering calendar include the North American Championships junior training camp and Western Championships in Whistler, B.C., and Cranbrook, B.C. on July 2 to 14.

The B meets will continue in July as well. The first will take place on July 7 at 6 p.m. on the Miles Canyon Road, 100-metres from the Alaska Highway junction on the Ear Lake map.

The second July meet will be on July 21 at the Yukon College on its map.

In August, B meets will continue as well as the Canadian Championships in Ottawa to finish out the orienteering season.
