More than 500 orienteers from 22 countries are in the fourth day of competition today.

They were at the Carcross Desert this morning for the sprint event for both the North American and Canadian Orienteering Championships.

The first event of the North American championships was held Saturday at Croucher Creek off the Long Lake Road. Sunday’s North American event was held out at Lewes Lake and yesterday’s team relay and club championships were held up the Grey Mountain Road at the biathlon facility.

While athletes from outside North America cannot win medals, they are here to compete as some of the events are world ranking events.

The Yukon has been well represented in several age classes, from 10 years old up to 85-plus.

Whitehorse orienteerer Nesta Leduc of the Yukon Orienteering Association, for instance, finished first Sunday among the three women entered in the Female 85 class.

There were a handful more of first-place finishes in different age categories and several top-10 places from the 30 or so Yukon athletes.

Wednesday is a rest day before the final two days of the Canadian championships Thursday and Friday.

Race director Afan Jones of the Yukon association explained in a brief interview at the biathlon facility that logistics have been complicated, with such things as busing that many participants to and from the events.

But everything had gone as planned so far, he indicated.
