The local minor softball season ended on the biggest stage in town Saturday afternoon.

After spending the season at the neighbouring 7Up minor softball diamonds, the U12 and U14 divisions concluded with tournaments at the Pepsi Softball Centre.

In the U12 final, Office Supply Centre outlasted Canadian Tire 10-8 with the clinching catch coming by way of Paige Stockley on a difficult pop fly behind first.

“The ability of every player on the team to get on base consistently was the difference,” said Office Supply coach Jan Malfair.

Malfair praised her squad for their good sportsmanship throughout the tournament, saying her ecstatic players had a hoot throughout each of their games Friday and Saturday.

“(They showed) great camaraderie during the tournament,” Malfair said. “The kids learned throughout the season and particularly during the tournament, to support each other and cheer each other on.”

Other players making solid contributions were Wynne Anderson-Lindsay, Sydney Benoit, Hugo Burgess, Hailey Clay, Cole Cowan, Zeke Dukart, Brayden Gleason-Frost, Zachery Godin, Jayden Hardie, Jerome Hoeden, Kurtis Hyatt, Albert Johnson, Alexa Mannen, Lou Samson-Noormohamed and John Tipton.

MacPherson Rentals finished third, followed by Arctic Backhoe Services in fourth.

Meanwhile, in the U14 final, the “Big Black Machine” chugged along to victory, as the black-jerseyed Yukon College squad downed Dave’s Cleaning Crew 18-8.

Pitchers Jacob Finton and Josh Zaccarelli turned in a solid effort, but it was the base-stealing efforts of Yukon College that led them to victory.

“We turned them into demons on the basepaths,” said coach Chris McNutt. “That was a little coaching strategy where we just said: ‘Run. Run like maniacs every chance you get.’ You’re allowed to steal and they kind of adopted that with a ferocity.”

McNutt said his squad’s skills developed quickly over the six-week softball eason.

“They don’t get a lot of time to play, but by the time they’ve played six weeks, some of their basic skills are in place,” he said. “It’s great to watch them develop.”

Other members of Yukon College were Jackson Benn, Connor Cozens, Liam Hudson, Kenny Hyatt, Cole McCulloch, Jarod McCulloch, Kyron Pettigrew-Crosby, Matthew Tremblay, Drayvon Yeulet and Zac Zimmermann.

Meanwhile, Dave’s Cleaning Crew took the loss in stride.

“We were under .500 all year, but this weekend we went on a bit of a run,” said team parent Rob Johnson.

“We had more girls than anybody, but they were solid. We had a lot of keen athletes. Yukon College just played very well defensively.”

M&M Meat Shops finished third, followed by Arctic Backhoe Services.

The younger U6, U8 and U10 teams wrapped up their seasons last Wednesday at the Pepsi Softball Centre.
