Local minor softball enjoyed a thrilling finish Saturday, as both the U-12 and U-14 seasons ended with the territorial championships.
Local minor softball enjoyed a thrilling finish Saturday, as both the U-12 and U-14 seasons ended with the territorial championships.
It took extra innings for Office Supply Centre to topple Boston Pizza 27-26 in the U-14 final, completing a Cinderella run that all got started with an unassisted triple play by second baseman Trenten Hope in the first game of the tournament Friday night.
With runners on first and second, Hope snagged a line drive out of the air, touched second base, and tagged the runner coming at him to end the game, to give his club its second win of the season, 17-5 over Archbould Photography.
"That was a very good omen for the weekend,” said coach Dave Locke.
Office Supply Centre struggled through the regular season, winning just one game – their last. But everything came together in the championships.
"It was kind of a short year due to cold weather in the beginning, so we didn't get a lot of time with our kids,” he said.
"So we didn't do particularly well in the year portion.”
Locke said he was fortunate that all of his players were in town for the finals. Many teams were missing players.
"It certainly evened things up a little bit,” he said. "I felt pretty good going into this tournament, that we could do better because we had actually gotten better every outing.”
In the final, Office Supply Centre came back from an 11-run deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning to force extras.
Boston Pizza was able to escape a bases-loaded jam, recording the final out when Office Supply's last batter popped up to the pitcher, who caught the ball after the catcher bobbled it.
Boston Pizza went up four runs in the top of the sixth, but Office Supply came back to win it in the bottom half of the inning. The final run came down to a play at the plate.
"It was the closest thing to my playing days to having that sort of feeling,” Locke said, who admitted he got emotional post-game. "That was amazing. There's been big games in that park in my career, and this was right there.”
The champs also faced Boston Pizza on Saturday morning, and it also took extra innings to decide that game, which finished with Office Supply Centre on top 26-21. The win put them directly into the final, whereas Boston Pizza needed to beat Yukon College to earn a rematch. They did just that, winning a squeaker 21-18, leaving Yukon College with the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, in the U-12 final, M&M Meat Shops beat Arctic Backhoe 21-12 in what was a close game until the final inning.
"We crawled up by 11, and then shut them down in the last inning and walked away with it,” M&M coach Rob Williamson said.
M&M Meats went undefeated throughout the regular season, thanks to a great team effort.
"Everybody was strong,” Williamson said. "You don't really need to have any superstars. You just need people that can get on base. We were just a well-balanced team.”
MacPherson Rentals won bronze, losing 7-5 to M&M in the semifinal.
