WELCOMING WINTER - 'It's fabulous' said Jeanne Burke after finishing a ski Thursday afternoon. Enthusiastic skiers have been on the trails since last week, and once away from the chalet the trails are excellent. Trails aren't recommended for novice skiers at this point.

Thanks to the recent snowfall in late October it's possible for some early season skiing at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club.

Skiing conditions improved this week as a result of some additional snow fall, but skiers are still being advised to be careful while using the trails.

It is also being recommended that novices or individuals new to the sport wait until more snow has fallen before heading out on the trails.

The club manager for the Whitehorse Ski Club said it's rare for trails to be skiable in October.

"We don't have an official opening, it always just kind of gradually opens," said Mike Gladish. "So anybody who has rock skis, and anybody who's sort of experienced, the skiing has started, but I wouldn't recommend it for novice skiers. If you hit a rock and you trip, you might hurt yourself and it's just not worth it."

Rock skis are skis that a person wouldn't mind getting scratched up and can be rented at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club.

The wax room is open today from 9 a.m. to noon and then from four p.m. to nine p.m. as well as Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Starting on Monday the ski club will be operating under its full winter hours, which includes it being open until 10 p.m. on weekdays and 6 p.m. on weekends.

Discounted day passes can be purchased at the ski club for half price up until Monday morning.

The skiing conditions are fair on Selwyn's Loop and very good on the McIntyre Loop, while the Coppper Trail to the Gravel Pit, Lower Valley, Upper Valley, Coyote, Selwyn's Loop, and Wolf were all packed on Wednesday, stated a Thursday Mt. Mac Ski Report.

A track was also set on Copper, Wolf, Coyote and Selwyn's and is poor to fair for classic skiing, the ski report stated.

Gladish said about one third of the ski club's trail system has been packed so far.

The ski club will host the Coast Mountain Sports Wax and Wine event on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the wax room at Mt. Mac. The wine and wax event is open to anyone and is free of charge.

Another November event that is being put on by the ski club will be a basic grooming clinic, which is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m.
