Northwestel and Latitude wireless announced a five-year partnership with Mt. Sima worth $50,000 earlier this morning.

The sponsorship will see Mt. Sima get $10,000 a year over five years to go towards the facility's operation and new programming.

The announcement was made in part with the Great Northern Ski Society, which runs Mt. Sima.

"As the population continues to grow in the north we really want to encourage an active lifestyle,” said Paul Flaherty, president and CEO of Northwestel.

Flaherty announced the sponsorship today on behalf of Northwestel and Latitude Wireless, explaining that the money was equally contributed by Dakwakada Development Corporation, who own a 30 per cent stake in Latitude.

"We're excited to be apart of this initiative,” said Brian MacDonald, director of Dakwakada Development Corporation. "We are very pleased to join with Northwestel to support this excellent recreational facility, which so many people enjoy throughout the winter. Mt. Sima helps to make Yukon a better place to live and visit, and we are happy to be a part of that.”

Craig Hougen, president of the Great Northern Ski Society accepted the sponsorship.

"$50,000 is the largest sponsorship Mt. Sima has ever received,” he said. "We have had tremendous support from the business community.”

Hougen said Mt. Sima is almost full on sponsorship opportunities, after the sizable contribution from Northwestel, but says there are still a few opportunities for business owners to get involved if they are interested as Mt. Sima moves forward.

Hougen said the money would go towards improved programming at the already busy ski hill.

"It allows us to build deeper and richer programs within Mt. Sima,” Hougen said.

This year Mt. Sima added ice climbing and snow shoe rentals to the activities available on the hill, and Hougen said they hope to some day have even more activities up there, including expanding the summer mountain biking opportunities.

"We are looking at having Mt. Sima as a year round facility,” he said.

"They have a vision for where Mt. Sima is going to go,” Flaherty said.

Ya just gotta be kidding? Right? Sponsor

that much money to a ski resort (who overcharges, pay their staff LOW wages, work them long hours, etc), while their boys at the top live at THE TOP? I dont think so. Especially when BOTH Northwestel and Latitude Wireless 'ROB' me each and every month (and are on the phone if 1x day late), of HIGH phone rates. Ya gust gotta be kidding?
